The Thing About Ankle Boots

Ankle boots, they’re scary.

It’s a decapitated boot.  I feel like that speaks for itself, really.

Intimidating though they may be, they’re really a cute way to mix up the fall/winter legging and boot look.

Before you dive head first into stocking up on midget boots - give the look you're going for a bit of thought.

Lets take this one, for example.

The monochromatic outfit is broken up by the ankle boots which add some weight to the whole ensemble. This, coupled with wider shoulders on the leather jacket helps balance out the head to toe appearance.

This is an example of ankle boots worn well.

This, on the other hand...

Not good, Phil. Not good at all.

Why, you ask?

First issue: Proportions. The dress, as cute and boho as it may be, hits mid-calf. This would be fine if the shoes she paired it with were strappy heels or gladiator sandals. Alas, they are not.

Ankle boots need to be worn in a balanced way, leaving a space of 5 to 7 inches between your hemline and boot is going to look funky no matter how you slice it.

Second issue: The boots are black. Her dress is cream, orange, and brown. That's an issue, y'all. Even though she's apparently happy about it...it's a problem.

These ankle boots work. The space between the top of the boot and the bottom of the pants is small enough to not be distracting when you take in the whole outfit. Also, they're just really cute.

Basically, when you pull on a pair of ankle boots, stay balanced.

Don't wear them with something that works against the flow of the outfit by making it busy and distracting.

The goal is to have an overall look that is aesthetically pleasing and isn't difficult for the eyes to process.

From what I can tell, when you put on shorter boots with an ill-placed hemline, instead of the outfit coming together as a whole - it becomes choppy and doesn't give the eyes an easy place to rest which leaves me with a vague impression that the outfit doesn't work.

An easy fix for this is just to keep your bottom half simple, do leggings, skinnies or nothing at all if you're bold and trendy like that...

...I'm joking. Please wear pants.

Make what you wear on your torso interesting and the outfit should come together just fine.

See how she balanced the weight of the shoes with the top she paired with it? Well played.

And again, balanced.

Disclaimer: this isn't something I would ever wear. Sometimes I wonder if girls who wear mini dresses ever have awkward moments when they forget themselves and cross their legs, or run, or take long strides, or try to kick off assailants.

Whatevs.

Give ankle boots a chance and let me know how you like 'em!

xoxo,

Rachael
